| TheStitching Project Handwork is a luxury in the fast life of the west….handwork is a lifeline in the slower environment of the developing world, when one meets the other a relationship of mutual appreciation and benefits can grow. The Stitching Project is a social enterprise; that is a business dedicated to producing quality work, which will contribute to the ambience of the purchasers’ environment whilst at the same time contributing fairly to the livelihood of the producers. The Stitching Project produces quality hand work made into home wares and family heirlooms sold through the label Pukka Desirables. It also sells the same hand stitched components individually as Pukka Components for you to use in creating your own family heirlooms. The Stitching Project is based in rural Rajasthan, India outside Pushkar on the edge of the Thar Desert; an area renown for its bold textile heritage, we hope to be starting a new chapter based on this heritage. At the moment we are creating the opportunity for local income generation, an art studio- The Pukka Studio for foreign textile enthusiasts to participate in workshops locally [block print, tie and dye, design and inspiration workshops and guided tours through the local and regional textile fixes] and in the future a Learning Centre for our local people to develop their literacy and entrepreneurial skills. You are most welcome to visit in person or through our website. At the moment designs come from Fiona Wright, in time it is hoped some of our ladies will have a much greater input into the work we produce. We have based our designs on materials locally available, skill levels existant and an eye to the international fashion and homewares market.
