| Pushkar Pushkar is an ancient town, its name means "Born of a Flower" and it is the site the God Brahma chose for sacred ceremonies many millenia ago. Reference is made to it in the sacred texts of the Mahabharata and it is considered one of the five most sacred places for all Hindus to visit. Although its linage is august it is also a peaceful 'village' in the Rajasthan country side perfect for relaxing and contemplating the Universe. Pushkar Camel Fair Once a year, at the time of the full moon in Kartik [around early Novemeber if you are unfamiliar with the Hindu calendar] Pushkar is bursting at the seams with people and livestock. Celebrated at the time it is believed Brahma created the spring that feeds Pushkar's Holy Lake is Pushkar's Camel Fair Many thousands of people descend on Pushkar at this time, farmers with their thousands of camels, cows, goats and sheep for sale, merchants with everything a farmer or his lady wife might need or want and many travellers from afar to soak up the atmosphere. |
